During his 40+ years practicing law, Steve Schmidt has experienced a uniquely diverse practice which has included corporate, litigation, healthcare, estate planning, probate, trusts, special education for handicapped children, family law and mediation client representation. Steve’s practice has evolved from his years as a general practitioner representing individuals and small businesses from 1974 to 1987 in a small law firm appearing before the courts, legislature and administrative agencies representing clients with diverse and complex legal issues.
As a result of the breadth of his legal background, Steve’s clients not only entrusted their personal business, tax and estate planning matters to him, but also relied on him for his counsel in pre-nuptial planning and divorce litigation. Since 1987, Steve has devoted his practice exclusively to representation of family law clients formerly with Mackall Crounse & Moore and from 1997 with Rider Bennett, as chair of its Family Law Practice Group.
Steve is a qualified neutral for the mediation and arbitration of family and civil cases and Steve has taught family law mediation techniques for several years. On June 30, 2004, Steve ‘retired” from family law litigation and established the Steven B. Schmidt Mediation, LLC office to devote 100% of his professional career over the next ten years to Alternative Dispute Resolution through mediation and arbitration of cases referred to him by other lawyers and judges.
Steve’s public and community service as a board member and chair of Regions Hospital in St. Paul for almost 20 years, and many years as a member of a City Council and chair of its planning commission are indicative of Steve’s leadership, business and financial judgment. In his law practice and in his community service, Steve has demonstrated his ability to relate to people building the consensus needed to make difficult decisions.
